Atacand is prescribed to help lower blood pressure in individuals suffering from hypertension. It falls under the category of angiotensin receptor agonists. Atacand functions by decreasing hormones that narrow blood vessels, leading to relaxed vessels and reduced pressure. Additionally, Atacand is used in conjunction with other medications to manage heart failure and kidney issues stemming from type 2 diabetes.

The initial recommended dose of Atacand is 16mg, to be taken once daily. The amount can vary based on the individual's response to the medication. Blood pressure response may depend on dosages ranging from 2 to 32 mg. Atacand can be administered once or twice daily, with total daily dosages varying from eight mg to thirty-two mg. Research indicates that higher dosages do not enhance treatment efficacy. The antihypertensive effects are most pronounced during the initial two weeks, with optimal blood pressure reduction typically achieved within four to six weeks of treatment.

Like other antihypertensive medications, Atacand can lower blood pressure to levels that are too low, potentially resulting in dizziness, weakness, and chest tightness. Allergic reactions, primarily characterized by hives, may occur. There is a risk of angioedema associated with its use, which can lead to swelling in the hands, face, lips, tongue, and even the eyes. Pregnant women should avoid Atacand, as it may lead to fetal development issues or even death. Women planning to become pregnant should consider alternative treatments. Breastfeeding has not been shown to transfer the drug from mother to infant.

Patients with imbalances in sodium and potassium electrolytes should inform their doctors, as Atacand may cause unintended shifts in electrolyte levels. The use of diuretics should be contemplated alongside Atacand, as their combined effects may lead to excessive changes in blood pressure. A history of heart and kidney issues may make Atacand inappropriate. This medication may not be prescribed to patients undergoing dialysis. Furthermore, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can diminish its effectiveness.
